My 'bangspiration' behind creating "I like your bangs" book came as a result of many random moments in my life. For starters, with the exception of a few years in college, I've always had bangs. I can't look at myself without bangs and I ignore people who tell me "you should grow your bangs out". For me, bangs represent youth, and while this might seem juvenile, my youth is not something I have ever been willing to give up. I became obsessed with straight bangs when I couldn't take my eyes off of Phoebe Cate's bangs in the movie Shag (I was obsessed with her head bands, too!). And, bangs framed my face in high school when I wore my hair up on the sides almost every day my senior year. Here we are, many years later, somehow they are still around.
So what really sparked this idea? One early afternoon, while driving, I noticed myself doing the mirror check on my bangs and wondered why I was so obsessed. What could I do to create a community around bangs for people as obsessed as I was? Then the idea came to me, like most ideas do when you are taking a shower, only I was in my car... I realized that I could co-create a photography book that showcased portraits of girls with straight bangs. At this time, I wanted to call it "Bang Me". Yes, it was sort of a risky title and it didn't make it to the cover, but this was my exact moment of "bangspiration". I had little time to plan knowing I wanted to shoot it during SXSW and I was already managing a large photo shoot for work at the time so I knew it wasn't going to be easy to pull off. So, yes, it was chaotic, but I had support from friends, family, stylists and the ever so generous Austin community that helped me with a successful production. And, thankfully, I partnered with an amazing photographer I had worked with for several years, Sam Robinson, in order to capture the emotion tied to one's bangs. As predicted, he nailed it.
I often wonder where random inspiration comes from and what really drives one's creative motivation and passions. We might never really know until all the pieces come together, but the moment you feel inspired, create a to-do list and take action!
