One Day in Louisville, KY
Louisville is one of those cities that isn’t typically ranked high on everyone’s bucket list, but it is full of surprises and is a quick and fun weekend get away. It provides a great mix of historic architecture, art and adorable trendy neighborhoods that make you feel like you are at home (or back in Austin, Texas).
If you can plan your visit in advance, it will be worth it if you score a one night stay at 21c Museum Hotel, rated as one of the top hotels in the south by Conde Nast. It’s not only a place of rest, but also an art gallery within one and includes access to one of the best restaurants in Louisville, Proof on Main. Although a bit pricey, this hotel does offer up a generous discount on Hotel Tonight on average of $150 off. Track the rates daily on the app for about two weeks in advance to ensure you can lock a room at the lowest price. I found the price per room doesn’t change if you book the day of (I did), so try booking a few days in advance just to be on the safe side.
The hotel is walking distance to many bars and restaurants, but you will want to venture out to some of these cool spots mostly located in the East Market District, also known as “Nulu”, an up and coming artsy neighborhood, with places to shop, eat and drink.
Some of my favorites:
Coffee (+baked goods): Please and Thank You
Antique treasures (3 stories high!), Joe Ley Antiques. Don’t forget to roam their outdoor patio.
Sunday brunch (10-3 pm) @ The Limbo or just stop in for a fun Tiki beverage (4-7 pm daily). *About a 15 minute walk (0.8 mile) distance from 21c Museum Hotel, located downtown.
For solid cocktails, food, glow in the dark ping pong & art, check out Garage Bar. The brick oven pizza is amazing! Be sure to observe the in-progress destructing car crashing art installation. They also have a weekend brunch from 11-4 pm on Saturday & Sunday.
